I can't tell you how many times I have sat through an "innovative approach to ___________" (fill in the blank with whatever term is popular right now) during my years as a public school educator. I have had training on topics from technology to reading, from child abuse (how to spot it, not how to do it) to classroom management. Some of these sessions have been informative, helpful, even enjoyable but the majority have simply been a repetition of my college-level education courses. Why did I sign-up? Vocabulary. Yep, the problem in continuing education is vocabulary. Terms that were used fifteen years ago to describe a particular approach have been deemed outdated and therefore have been replaced with a new, less-concise, catchy phrase that makes you think you are getting something never-before-seen. It is quite disappointing to sign-up for one of these trainings, thinking that you will come away refreshed, rejuvenated, and refueled for the task at hand, but only gaining one new vocabulary word or catch phrase to apply to a tried and true method you are already using.¼/p>
