Learning from Video Games

Can you really learn from playing video games?  Video games have come a long way since the Atari 2600 but can we really attibute meaningful learning to them?  Growing up we heard plenty of adults tell us that playing video games, like watching TV, would rot your brain, but now that may not be so.  Nintendo Wii Sports is a full-body interactive approach to entertainment but it also gives participants the opportunity to learn about rules of the game, scoring, and strategy.  Wii Music gives players the opportunity to learn about musical instruments.  Leapfrog has many games targeted at toddlers and preschoolers that focus on counting, ABC's, and colors. These games are a great example of a way that video games are used in learning.  In my experience as a classroom teacher, any material that was presented in a gaming format was quickly absorbed.  However, all material cannot be presented in this fashion.  Students are sometimes so accustomed to learning through video games that traditional methods of presenting information are often poorly received.
