A growing trend in the technology world is towards gaming that promotes brain exercise. An
article in the Washington Post reports that seniors adults are increasingly seeking out ways to maintain their cognitive level. Senior Centers across the nation are offering more programs, like Wii and Ninetendo DS games, to meet the growing demand.
I am a firm believer in the theory that if "you don't use, you lose it". These types of programs that encourage reasoning, critical thinking skills, and memory fit the "use it" model. The senior centers of today have little resemblance to the basket-weaving centers of the past. Participants are seen playing video games, working Sudoku puzzles, and contributing to group trivia games.
Often after retirement seniors can experience a sense of isolation and loneliness. The senior centers that offer programs promoting brain exercise help combat isolation through group activities and team games. In my opinion, social participation contributes to good mental health and overall well-being.¼/p>
