It Takes a Village

You've heard the expression "it takes a village to raise a child", right?  But how true is it?  What contributions do we make to the children in our community?  In a limited exposure, how do our actions and words effect the kids who observe them?  I am a firm believer that children are our future so I think we ought to take our job of raising them very seriously.  Yes, kids are great fun and very entertaining but as the adults we need to encourage appropriate behavior in all situations.  So what is the appropriate role of a "villager" who sees a child that needs raising?  I tend to take over as an authority figure when children are involved, even if the children aren't mine.  In the classroom that's expected.  But what about in the community?  Is it appropriate for me to correct and redirect a child who is overstepping the boundary of acceptable behavior?  What if, that behavior is accepted and expected at the child's home?  Should I call attention to it, am I negligent if I ignore it?  The village will be a much more pleasant place to live, work,  and play if parents will take their roles seriously.  As a member of the village, I plan to guide and encourage children in appropriate behavior and choices.  I hope that other villagers will do the same for my childre.
