A recent article in the
Washington Post describes a relatively new classroom management technique that involves the use of sign language. Students are taught and encouraged to use a basic vocabulary of sign language to communicate simple responses and questions. Teachers use sign to respond to basic requests.
As a whole, this approach cuts down on off-topic matters. Students and teachers are able to stay focused on the lesson while not being distracted by house-keeping matters, such as bathroom, water, and library requests. What a benefit for students with ADD tendencies!
Teachers who a capable of multi-tasking will find this of great benefit. Classroom management can be one of the most challenging aspects of teaching. Even the smartest, best prepared teacher can struggle in a classroom of mixed ability, maturity, and interest. Any management tool available is helpful to the teacher trying to accomplish a lesson.
