Washington Post columnist, Jay Mathews, discusses the prepared speech by Arne Duncan, Education Secretary. Duncan, reportedly, condemns most teacher preparation programs in the country, saying that they are doing a poor job of preparing teachers for the reality of the classroom.
In my experience, limited as it may be, college professors are poor teachers. The subject matter may be engaging. The students may be entertained by wit and humor. The sheer novelty of the topic may keep the student's interest. But how much teaching actually goes on in the college classroom?
Certainly college professors must be trained to teach, right? Wrong. So perhaps one of the ways to fix the problem in our schools is to begin by making sure that our college professors can teach. I believe that's called modeling.
