Does a Degree Make a Difference?

Does having a college degree make a difference in the type of job one can land in this economy?  Does having a degree make you a more valuable employee?  Does having a degree make you better equipped for the job?  The Washington Post reports that it may not make that much of a difference. According to the article, the current recomendation from the experts is to claim "bachelor's studies" if you have completed some college coursework but have not obtained a degree.  There are large numbers of people who, for various reasons, did not complete their degree but are still marketable and qualified. What purpose does the degree serve then?  It does prove that the individual has follow-through.  It does prove that the degree holder is capable of hard work.  It does prove that the individual is committed to their education.  Does that mean that the same cannot be said of non-degree holders?  Absolutely not.  The individual who does not have a degree may have just as much follow-through, hard work, and education as the other.  In this kind of economy and job market, I think it is unfair to assume things based on degrees or lack thereof.  Each individual deserves a fair shot at the open position for which they can prove they are qualified.
