An article in the
Washington Post has some folks scratching their heads. Could the Obama administration really be the end of Teach for America? The intense, unconventional teacher-training program relies on strong support from the federal government to exist. The article reports that the funding in question may be eliminated with Obama and Duncan's, education secretary, overhaul of the system.
Strange. TFA has been highly regarded by the current administration in the past. Why wouldn't the administration protect this program it compliments. Essentially, the report says that in the long run the group may benefit more from the amended budget. The long run, however, is a gamble and makes it difficult to plan ahead.
So, could this really be the end of TFA? It is doubtful. The teachers, no matter their skill level or overall contribution to education, are needed. They fill positions, for however long, that no one else will. The federal goverment would be insane not to support a group that provides the teachers necessary to complete the school year.
