An article in the
New York Times is reporting on a very exciting movement in education. According to the article, many universities are beginning to post their course content on websites with free access. From syllabi to specific assignments, the general public can access the same material as an enrolled student.
So what's in it for the institutions? I supposed on major benefit would be free advertising. Imagine the number of prospective students who could "sample" a course without footing the bill. Now imagine how many of those students will actually choose to register because they are guaranteed to be interested in the material.
Clearly what's in it for the general public is much more exciting. You and I now have the "free"dom to experience the college and university courses we would like without the huge bills. For those undecided students, what better way to gain insight than to actually view the material you will be learning before locking in to one course or another.
