Have you ever noticed that when folks are emotionally invested in something that they will sacrifice for it, protect it, and work hard to maintain it? A wise leadership team will encourage and enable folks to become emotionally invested in the workplace. But how? In most cases, emotional attachment is a natrual progression, however, in the workplace that is not always the case. How do effective leaders inspire their employees to become invested? An article from Chief Learning Officer discusses this very topic. Click here to read it.
In my experience, you can become invested in something when you possess a genuine interest and are allowed to explore that to the fullest. Generally, becoming more knowledgeable about a particular topic also helps you become more sensitive to that topic's longevity. In the workforce, however, emotional connectedness is fueled by the genuine example of others, specifically leaders. For example, if you are working in a school when a new learning initiative is introduced and expected to be applied but the administration team has it's doubts and doesn't believe the program will be successful, the teachers will mostly approach the new initiative with disdain.
On the other hand, sometimes emotional positivism starts from the ground up. Some folks have the ability to inspire the ones "above" them with their optimistic outlook and work ethic. Either way, making an emotional commitment is essential to the success of any organization. Without it, the turnover rate will be high and productivity low. Not a good combination for any organization.
