An article in the Washington Post describes a comment made by President Obama regarding the education of his two girls. Obama clearly demonstrated his lack of faith in the D.C. public schools in their current state. In effect, he said that the area schools were not of high enough caliber for his children, that they couldn't meet his children's needs. While I appreciate a parent's perrogative to decide what is best for his or her children, I think that our President ought to display a little more confidence in the public schools.
Unless you are a teacher or your children are in a public school it is difficult to gauge what is really going on there. Sure, Obama has the most informed informants but how can he get a parent's perspective without actually being one? Wouldn't it be nice if the administration in charge of education reform in the public schools actually understood and experienced what public school was really like?
The price tag that accom panies the private school the Obama's have chosen is astounding. Imagine what that kind of infusion of cash could do for those underrated D.C. schools. If the rich were willing to invest thousands of dollars into the public schools, as they do by paying private school tuition, the public schools would be in great shape. They wouldn't be experiencing huge budget cuts, lack of supplies, and poor working conditions-- the rich wouldn't stand for it.
It would be nice if our presidential administration had a little faith and investment in the schools they are seeking to change.
