Rhee Leaves

Washington is a buzz with Michelle Rhee's resignation from her position as Washington D.C.'s chancellor of education.  She has been a veritable whirlwind of change since her employment began three years ago.  Rhee has turned that school system on its ear.  Firing hundreds of teachers, creating new teacher evaluations, closing schools- Ms. Rhee has been a busy woman.  But she hasn't done it alone.  She has had a team of forward-thinking individuals to spur her on at every turn.

Some in Washington are celebrating her resignation.  To them she represents unnecessary change, extreme moves, and thoughtless bureaucratic decision-maker.  Her departure will bring them relief.  They may not fear losing their jobs.  They may not anticipate additional training that the old administration imposed.  They may not fear the closing of their school.  But they may not be pushed away from complacnency and towards greatness.

Some in the area are mourning her loss.  To them she represents a breath of fresh air, a necessary and welcome change, and a force that won't take no for an answer.  She challenges them.  She inspires them.  She guides them.  But she may not have allowed them to be seen for who they are with out her shadow casting them into darkness.  Maybe now the schools will be about the people, the teachers, administrators, and students, in them.
