SCORM

The Sharable Content Object Reference Model, usually referred to as SCORM,  represents a collection of standards and specifications governing web-based learning activities.  SCORM is a product of the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense.  The Model is adapted from multiple sources to provide a comprehensive standard for online learning. In essence, when a content developer produces an educational product that conforms to SCORM standards, it can be viewed on any web site that delivers content using a SCORM-conformant player.  The content will be presented consistently, as designed. SCORM also allows for consistent monitoring and recording of student interactions during the activity.  The SCORM specifications allow authors to know how their content will perform on any website that is SCORM compliant.

SCORM compliance allows greater interoperability between websites, computers, and portable media without restricting an author or developer's ability to customize content and delivery.  Authoring conformant materials ensures that a picture or video is displayed in the same place, with the same controls, every time the content is displayed.  If a developer wants to skip lessons when a student meets certain criteria, SCORM outlines the standard.

Many vendors use the term SCORM very loosely. In fact ther are several versions of SCORM.  The current version is SCORM 2004, Version 4.  Other versions you may see referenced are SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, Version 3. TrainingForce On-Demand Learning conforms to both versions of the SCORM 2004 standard.  SCORM allows developers to consider how your content interacts with the user and allows you to track content data in between sessions. It allows you to grade users, track usage times, and use rule based navigation.

There are additional standards out there governing content development, but the SCORM series is the most universally accepted. These standards are constantly being revised based on technological and educational best practices, so always test your courseware fully with any system before committing to the purchase of a training management system.  Many content development tools utilize features beyond SCORM standards, that are specific to an individual learning management system. One of the key benefits of TrainingForce is that the system not aligned with any single content vendor or development toolset. TrainingForce accepts your content and delivers it the way you intended regardless of the tools you use to create it, or the location where the content lives.
