SCORM Conformance
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a collection
of standards and specifications adapted from multiple sources to provide a comprehensive
standard of web-based learning. The Defense Department is leading the initiative
to standardize online learning to make it more efficient and less spastic through
the SCORM specifications. The SCORM specifications themselves allow institutions
to know what their content will do on any website that is SCORM compliant at any
time because the format is always the same.
SCORM compliance allows greater interoperability between websites, computers, and
portable media while leaving the freedom of the customization of content up to the
business owner rather than the website that hosts the content. Want pictures in
your content? No problem. Want to skip lessons if a student met certain criteria?
No problem. Want students to be able to choose their own lessons, have automated
content, or be able to sit back and hit a previous or next button to move around
the lessons? No problem.
The SCORM initiative considers how your content interacts
and allows you to track content data in between sessions. It allows you to grade
users, track usage times, and use rule based navigation. Additionally, the SCORM
initiative is still a work in progress. It is constantly being reviewed and revised
to accommodate new lines of thought.
